What are the benefits of sauna use?
Using a sauna goes far beyond relaxation. Heat therapy offers numerous benefits that most people don’t know about.
-
Strengthens the heart. The sauna works like cardiovascular exercise since it increases heart rate, blood flow, and stroke volume.
-
Detox. Sweating helps eliminate toxins and heavy metals, supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes.
-
Improves lung function. Sauna use can improve breathing and oxygen intake by clearing the airways.
-
Reduces cortisol levels. Daily sauna sessions improve relaxation and anxiety markers by lowering stress.
-
Speeds up recovery by boosting circulation and the release of proteins that help protect and repair muscle tissue.
-
Improves skin health and appearance. Heat opens the pores and helps eliminate impurities and dead skin cells.
What should you keep in mind before using a sauna?
Hydration
Drink plenty of water before and after the session (half a liter is a good goal). Avoid diuretics, alcohol, and sugary drinks.
Time
How long should you stay inside?
-
Beginners: 5 to 10 minutes
-
Regular users: 15 to 20 minutes
-
Experienced users: 20 to 25 minutes (always paying close attention to your body and how you feel)
Do not exceed 25 minutes inside the sauna. This can cause dehydration, electrolyte and mineral loss, and dizziness.
Start with 2 or 3 sessions per week and gradually increase if your body adapts well.
Temperature
Begin at the lowest temperature settings and increase gradually as your body gets used to the heat. Don’t over-do it, let your body train and adapt to the heat.
Exercise
Wait 15 to 30 minutes after an intense workout before entering the sauna to hydrate and allow your body to cool down first.
Why use the sauna post-exercise? Not only for its relaxing effects and faster muscle recovery, but because heat stimulates muscle-building processes. This happens because sauna use triggers the release of growth hormone.
Other considerations
-
After exiting, take a cool shower to help your body return to its normal temperature.
-
Consult your doctor if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, an abnormal heart rhythm, or if you are pregnant.
-
Avoid the sauna if you are sick or taking medication that affects temperature regulation.
-
Do not consume drugs or alcohol before, during, or after sauna use.
-
After a heavy meal, wait one hour before using the sauna.
-
A great idea: use it at night to enhance relaxation and improve sleep quality.
