How Cold Exposure Improves Brain Health: Benefits, Science, and Wellbeing

What Is Brain Health and Why Is It Important?

In general, when we think about “improving our health,” we tend to think of the heart, lungs, liver, and other organs. But we rarely think about the brain. And that’s a major mistake.

Brain health refers to the optimal functioning of the cognitive, sensory, emotional, behavioral, and motor capacities of the brain. A healthy brain allows us to process information, regulate emotions, maintain memory, and control vital functions.

Cold exposure is one of many tools that can improve brain health and help you:

What Does Cold-Plunging Do in the Body?

Before talking specifically about the brain, let’s review how cold impacts the body:

  1. Cardiovascular System. The cold shock generates initial vasoconstriction and, once out of the water, vasodilation. Blood becomes enriched with oxygen and nutrients and then flows throughout the body, strengthening the heart, improving circulation, and promoting cellular repair.

  2. Nervous System. Cold exposure activates the fight-or-flight response: adrenaline, dopamine, endorphins, and other chemicals are released, elevating energy levels, improving mood, focus, and reducing stress.

  3. Brown Fat and Metabolism. Cold exposure activates brown fat, which burns glucose and fats from the bloodstream to generate heat. This fat also activates metabolism.

How Cold Exposure Improves Brain Health

Thomas P. Seager (PhD) explains that cold-water immersion stimulates the production of key neurotransmitters that impact brain function. For example, one study (Šrámek et al., 2000) showed that dopamine and norepinephrine increased by 250% and 530% respectively after immersion in 14°C water.

Seager also explains that cold exposure increases insulin sensitivity, which can help prevent neurological disorders and protect the brain from metabolic dysfunction.

Insulin resistance is associated with plaque formation in blood vessels — and plaque in the brain is a characteristic physiological marker of Alzheimer’s disease.

By activating brown fat, the body promotes the growth of mitochondria in cells — and when mitochondria fail, cognitive and neurological problems can occur. In simple terms: more mitochondria functioning properly means better health.

Finally, by increasing circulation, more oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood reaches the brain, supporting nitric oxide production by endothelial cells, which is crucial for vasodilation and vascular health.


But How Do We Really Feel This?

Dopamine: More Focus and Motivation

Cold exposure triggers dopamine release. After a cryotherapy session, you’ll feel more motivated and better able to focus, perform, and even learn.

Adrenaline: Energy and Mental Clarity

The impact of cold water sends signals to the brain to release adrenaline. As a result, you feel an increase in alertness, clarity, and energy.

This cognitive boost is especially helpful in the morning when we’re still groggy and need a “wake-up slap” to start the day. It can be a great alternative to caffeine.

Additionally, doing cold exposure in the morning helps regulate the circadian rhythm and therefore improves sleep. This also has a positive effect on energy levels.

When we immerse ourselves in very cold water, the vagus nerve activates and shifts the body’s response from sympathetic to parasympathetic, reducing stress. Plus, since cold stimulates the release of endorphins, dopamine, and norepinephrine, it improves mental wellbeing.

Cold exposure also makes us more resilient to stress in the long term. Getting into ice-cold water despite discomfort is a form of training. When we do it repeatedly over time, we train the body to adapt and react less strongly to cold — and therefore to stress. In this way, we build a resilient mindset that can better handle and respond to stress.


What Else Can You Do to Support Brain Health?

  • Sauna. Recent studies have shown that sauna sessions can improve memory and even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Sauna heat increases blood flow to the brain, which promotes the growth of new neurons, while its stress-reducing effects may help prevent cognitive decline.

  • Exercise. People who engage in physical activity are more likely to maintain mental sharpness. Exercising regularly also improves balance, flexibility, strength, energy, and mood.

  • Sleep. Good rest is essential for neuronal regeneration and optimal cognitive function.

  • Nutrition. Consume foods rich in essential brain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and B vitamins.

  • Cognitive stimulation. Reading, learning a new language, solving challenges, taking a course — all of this keeps the mind active.
